THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SUICIDE

On May first, 1947 , Evelyn McHale , 23 years old , after arguing with her boyfriend , jumped into space from the balcony of the 86th floor of the Empire State Building in New York ( in the pocket of her coat there was a note : «He is much better without me, I wouldn't be a good wife») . Across the street, Robert Wiles , a photography student , listening to the tremendous impact, came with his camera and photographed the body of the beautiful young woman who had fallen on the roof of a limo from a representative of the United Nations , parked near the fifth Avenue . The image of Evelyn dead in the wreckage of the limo is at the same time shocking and heartwarming . And shows that death and suicide act , however brutal they may be, can have poetic forms . The picture almost looks like it was staged : notice as her left hand seems caressing the pearl necklace . The serenity of her face , legs crossed and the elegance of her body as if she was simply resting - no traces of blood at all - in the midle of destruction , create almost like a dreamlike image.
